This quote by Rick Rubin really resonated with me today.
 “All that matters is that you are making something you love, to the best of your ability, here and now.”

That’s really what it comes down to in the studio - just showing up, being present, and enjoying the process. I’m trying not to chase perfection, but the feeling that creating brings me, like the quiet moment when the colors start to speak or when the texture tells its own story. That’s really where the magic is.

I’m still completely drawn to these deep blues and greens. There’s something about layering texture and color that helps me express what words can’t. This piece is part of my Sea to Sky series, named after the breathtaking highway in British Columbia that winds north from Vancouver, where the blue Pacific Ocean meets the rugged evergreen mountain coast and the sky feels larger than life.

Painting these textured acrylic seascapes are my way of trying to capture the beauty of this coastline, the way the light moves, the shifting of blues, the pull of the water and forest. I’m continuing to build this series, and each new canvas takes me a little closer!

A glimpse of my process for my latest sea-to-sky series.

I’ve been working on a new series of textured paintings inspired by the rich tones of the sea and sky. I want these to have dimension you can feel, to capture the crashing of waves and vast horizons, and evoke a sense of calm when you look at them.

I’ve also absolutely fallen in love with this deep, saturated blue and need it everywhere 💙

Turn up the sound for the full ASMR sensory experience - can you hear the texture? I’m using Golden’s course pumice gel to create all of this beautiful texture, and that’s what gives it the satisfying scratchy sound!

I’ve been quietly working on a new series of textured abstract landscapes or maybe seascapes(?) I’ve been loving greens and blues lately, and removing the tape to see clean edges is so satisfying.

Perhaps it’s all the trees around with their leaves getting bigger and fuller. Or maybe it’s my heart missing the Pacific NW and its wild and rugged coastline with lush mosses and forests. Either way, these colors have my heart and have been pulling me into peace.

Where I’m at now with the small abstract acrylic painting I started a couple days ago. Fingers still sticky with gel medium which I use to apply collage papers and acrylic skins I’ve cut shapes from. This is just about finished and will be hanging @caminobakery Brookstown in October. This one is really bright! I’m still loving this pop of red and I’m letting a lot more show than I expected. Maybe I’ll make more to go with it. What do you think, would you hang something this bright in your space?

Part 2 of starting a new small acrylic abstract painting. Most likely there will only be bits of this first layer peeking through the final layer. We’ll see what happens! What’s your favorite way to start a new painting?

Starting a small acrylic abstract with a very bright red. The intention is that this color will peek through here and there after the final layer. I used Golden high flow medium and fluid acrylic paint to get that perfectly smooth, light texture.

Sneak peek of some works in progress in the golden hour light. These paintings both have about 5 or 6 layers already and I’m trying to be patient. Sometimes letting the painting develop slowly is the hardest part. But I’m always glad I did. It’s usually showing me something. Excited to see how these two abstract collage paintings turn out!
